20 Questions- Bear Edition (Age 5 years 5 months)

I copied this idea from my sister's blog.  Well, we started and poor Bear nearly had an anxiety attack.  She didn't think she knew the answers, she wanted to get all of them right, and she started crying.  Poor thing.  I tried to explain to her that she only had to answer them the best she could, she would not get into trouble if she was wrong.  So she answered a few and then decided to go watch whatever is on PBS Kids right now.

1. What's something I always say to you? No.
2. What makes me happy? hugs
3. What makes me sad? sticking my tongue out
4. How do I make you laugh? tickling me
5. What do you think I was like as a child? being mad (How did she know that?)
6. How old am I? I can't remember.  (crying) 17?
7. How tall am I? a hundred
8. What is my favorite thing to do? play games
9. What do I do when you are not around? scream
10. What am I really good at? tag
11. What am I not really good at? dancing?
12. What is my job? to take care of us
13. What is my favorite food? uhhh... broccoli?
14. What makes you proud of me? um, when you help me?  That makes me proud sometimes.
15. What do you and I play together? tag, peek-a-boo, princess monopoly
16. How are we the same? mom, i can't tell (ran off to watch tv)
17. How are we different? Our skin. You have darker skin and I have lighter skin.
18. If I were a cartoon character who would I be? Mickey Mouse.  Or Minnie mouse, because she's a girl and you're a girl.
19. How do you know I love you?  Hugs and kisses
20. Where is my favorite place? um, beach?

That's my girl. "20 questions" to be continued when she is up to it, maybe.

Cousins came quickly!

J's cousin and her family came to visit for a quick overnight stay on their way from WI to SC.  We are so glad they were able to come.  The boys played really well together last night... well, B and S did.  They built towers with some blocks.  The little guy is not quite big enough to play with the big kids yet.  Here are some photos from their visit:

Settling in, ready for Spring

standing on the bench... only allowed with mommy right there... even that scares me (it's a long way down)

"helping" daddy examine where the screen will go

someone is looking at the steps....

Our neighbor built the gate here to keep someone from sneaking up.  We should use it, huh?

new, soft area rug over the hardwood... so much cozier

A month ago, we were frantically packing up boxes, Hannah was helping Grandma pack the kitchen, and Buddy was climbing over barriers that were supposed to keep him out of our way so we could pack without having things unpacked by mr. curious.   The "big, big house" is starting to feel like home. Our home.

Bear can't quite pedal up the sloped driveway to the street, but that's not a bad thing.  While Buddy "napped" (after flooding the bathroom floor yesterday afternoon while I cleaned the kitchen), I helped her up the hill, and then she pedaled to the end of the cul de sac and back.  She is my cautious one.  We live on the quiet end of the street, about 4 houses from the end.  It's not very busy.  But thankfully she IS cautious and aware of cars, I'd rather have it that way.

Living in the apartment, with a flight of steps separating us from outside, dragging the outdoor toys out was a pain.  I am lazy, and so my girl has almost outgrown her bike.  She also still needs training wheels, but that's ok.  The trike/stroller combo?  Well, Brandon tipped it on its side yesterday ,trying to take it up the driveway and cracked the joint where the handle meets the parental steering column.  It is now even more of a pain to control.  I need to get B a regular plastic trike that he can learn to ride himself.  At least he likes to wear his helmet.

Spring is here in Tennessee, and that means J doesn't mind helping cook (grilling).  My job is to marinate the meats (or in the case above, make the burger patties, well seasoned) and make any sides. (Sometimes that means opening a bag of chips).  I can handle that.  The starter on our old fancy gas grill went out after 3 years or so, this time we bought a less expensive basic Weber charcoal grill.  The flavor is so much better.

We are so thankful for our new home.  J's commute is 30 minutes on the  very worst traffic day, which is half of what it was in Georgia.  He has been home more, and we know there was a reason we could not bring ourselves to buy a home there.  God had other plans.

Home is where the heart is

"Change is the one constant in life."

That quote seems to summarize the past 5 years of our family.  The kiddos are now in the 3rd dwelling they have lived in.  Bear has told me that she barely remembers the first.  It has been over a year and a half, and I certainly don't remember the house that I lived in when I was the age we moved with her the first time.

So far, they are adjusting well to this most recent change.  They miss their friends... H, especially.  We're not putting her back in Pre-K, and we're visiting churches, so it's going to take time to feel settled.  They LOVE the park that's nearby, and when we walked through our neighborhood's walking path in the woods last week,  H immediately began chanting, "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my."

They LOVE having space.  And boy, do we have plenty of it.  Upstairs play room.  Basement.  Their own bedrooms.  A yard, and a big one at that (.37 acre).  Here are a couple of more recent photos (including a shot of J in action on the home improvements)...

behind

So, um, the kids are behind on their shots.  Whoop-di-doo.  I haven't taken bear in for her 5 year checkup yet.  I took Buddy in yesterday because he's been fighting a lingering cough since Christmas, of course is dramatically improved the day I decided to take him in.  He also woke up with a fever of almost 102.... very high for him.  Ears looked good, doc said if he still has the temp on Wednesday call and she'll put him on antibiotics.... and to give him antihistamine before bed to help with the nighttime drainage.

Anyhoo... while waiting for the doc, I did an unscientific height check: Bear was approximately 44 inches tall according to the tree on the door in the exam room.  Buddy, 34 inches.  And he weighed in at 31.5 lbs.... I thought he was going to stay under 30 forever, apparently the toddler appetite or lack of is not hurting him, he is still growing.

I am on FB, and post most of my photos there... I will try to get some on here again soon.

quotables from 2 year old

Buddy was chewing on something that I couldn't see.
"yummy!" he exclaimed.
"What's yummy?" I asked.
"Boogers."

Grandma uses a step ladder to reach things on the top shelf of the kitchen cabinets.  After she stepped down a moment ago, Buddy exclaimed, "My turn!"

Merry Christmas-time

Here are some more recent photos... our little tree has since received more decorations, but this opportunity presented itself when the kiddos were all dressed up.  There's a good chance we may not send photos out with our cards this year, so... here you go!

Bear is 5 years and 2 months, Buddy is 2 years and 4 months, minus a couple of weeks each.  She's enjoying her Pre-K class 3 days a week, he enjoys tackling Mommy and basically being a stereotypical little mess making boy.  They love each other, and are wonderful blessings.

We spent Thanksgiving with GranWendy and Grandaddy in FL (along with Uncle Adam, Aunt Amy, and cousin Benjamin), and look forward to invading Uncle Nate, Aunt Cheryl, Emily and Madison's home along with the rest of  Daddy's side of the family in about a week or so.

Buddy's 1st ER visit

It's been 4 days already... but here's the story if have not already heard.  Grab a kleenex.

Original note begun 10:30pm, Tuesday 11/2/2010:
pardon me while i type one handed.  my son is snuggled against my tummy, and i'm holding him a bit tighter tonight.  i've heard the saying that goes something like, "having a child is like letting your heart walk around outside your body."  i thought i knew what that meant the day my daughter was born. then, when she had her first bout of dehydration and daddy took her to the e.r.  while i stayed home with baby brother.  i thought i knew that saying's meaning then, too.

of course, there are times when they are so happy that my heart wells up with pride and joy for them.  but today i experienced the terror of worrying about my baby on a new level.

the kids had been angels when we went the voting poll, and they were pretty good when we went to lunch at a local restaurant on the square.  (little man was so filled up on pretzels and goldfish that he was not hungry, but he did not have any fits, so that qualifies as a success in my book.)

just before two o'clock we pulled into the apartment complex, checked the mail, and instead of parking and going inside for naptime, i decided to go to the playground for a few minutes.

i thought b was just behind me when i turned around to look at something that caught my eye.  the reality was that he was straight on sissy's tail as she made her way to the monkey bars.  at the top of a four foot high platform...
*****
11 pm 11/2:  Both kiddos are in bed sound asleep.

As I remember... as I said, I had turned around for a second, thinking B was running near me.  THUD.  cry. "Oh, S***!!!!!  God, no!"  My heart raced as I ran toward my baby boy, who was face down under the monkey bars.  Scared to pick him up, but dying to at the same time, I rolled him over to lay him flat.  He looked at me, but his stare was rather blank.  I noticed scrapes on the side of his forehead and above his cheekbone, but the bleeding was minimal.  He closed his eyes.  I grabbed my cell phone and dialed 911.  Their staff was superb, staying on the line with me, helping me calm down.  The 20 seconds or so his eyes were closed seemed like an eternity, but when he opened them he reached up and hugged my neck tightly.  I breathed a huge sigh of relief, but was still worried.  911 lady kept talking to me as we waited for the ambulance, H stayed close, asking if her baby brother was ok but also somehow staying really, really calm and collected while Mommy went back and forth from near hysterics to deep breaths and hopefulness.  A little 6 year old boy had come over from his apartment to play and matter of factly told me that he fell off a play gym once.  (His mom was on her patio across the parking lot and she came over to see what was going on, too.) We heard the ambulance near, they pulled up on the other side of the park area and H ran over to show them where we were.  The 3 EMT's/Firefighters came over, immediately began checking B's vitals and asked what happened.  At that point, B was sitting in my lap facing out, eyes open but very quiet.  He kept blinking as though he would fall asleep, and he was getting less responsive.  When they first arrived, there was a possibility that I could drive him to the county hospital with a pediatric unit 20 minutes away, but we quickly determined he needed to go to the Children's Hospital of Atlanta for care.  So one of the EMT's grabbed H's car seat out of our car (which was next to the play ground, thank God, as we had driven there in stead of parking and walking over from our building).  B's vitals remained strong, but he kept falling asleep, and it wasn't long before he would not open his eyes when tickled.  Of course, it was also his nap time, and the EMT tried to encourage me to be hopeful since I had told him that B was a heavy sleeper.  However, I knew this was not my little bouncing baby boy's normal behavior.  And it terrified me.  He remained basically unresponsive, or extremely limited in his responses, for the next 2 hours or so.

In the ambulance, Big Sis sat in her car seat and observed, mostly.  I had tried to call 2 local friends, and succeeded in texting one to share the news, but there just wasn't time to leave big sis anywhere.  And with Daddy out of state, I also felt like she needed to be with us.  She thought it was cool that we were flying past all the other vehicles on the highway.  The EMT's and I kept trying to awaken him, but his sleep seemed to grow deeper... until they stuck him to give him an IV port just in case.  Then he whimpered a little and said "ouch."  While I hated to see him hurt, I knew that at least he was feeling things.

The rest of the evening is a blur.  Hospital staff took H to another room to color and do some crafts, B had already been assigned a tag bracelet, and he was whisked into triage, followed shortly by a CT scan of the head and a x-ray of the c-spine.  This is where Hope crept in.  My boy began to come back to me.  In the CT room, a projector displayed a rotating sea-life scene on the ceiling above the table.  "Look, mama. Fish. Water."  He pointed to the ceiling.  He was laying still.  The only time my 2 year old boy lays that still is when he sleeps.  When we moved down the hall to X-ray, he saw pumpkin and cat decals on the ceiling and identified them.  I explained to him that a big camera was going to take his picture, and asked him to look at the camera and say "cheese."  He kept talking about the pumpkin, the cat, and the camera.  For this scan, they even had to repeat a lateral film because he had moved his head while I helped hold his arms down flat.

His improvement continued while we waited in his ER room.  He laid flat far longer than I had expected him to, but soon, he began rolling around.  He was wearing a neck brace as a precaution, and it was not very long until he sat up.  Shortly after that, Aunt Sara arrived, having survived rush hour traffic in Atlanta.  Oh, how grateful I am for her tonight.

The nurses came in periodically to check his vitals, and he became increasingly more normal.  His movement set of the equipment alarms.  He pretended the TV remote was a telephone and called the nurses station for help by pressing the button as he talked on his "phone."  He sang "the wheels on the bus go round and round."  While he likes that song, I can't help but wonder if it because he knew he was in an ambulance (because we told him so) or rolling down the hall on a cot.

Sitting up-with his neck brace on- in his ER room

Finally, the doctor came in and authorized his release as his test were fine, and not a moment to soon.  He showed her how he could stand on his bed and step up onto the railing while he hugged mommy's neck... with all his wires still attached.
As we drove home and the sky darkened, he sang "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" from his cousin's car seat. Big Sis fell asleep pretty quickly, but in the parking garage she told Aunt Sara that she did not like it when her brother got hurt.
(Thank God for babies in the family!  We did not grab his car seat when we took Sissy's.)  As we waited in the drive through at Chik-fil-A, he exclaimed "chicken!"  And of course, when we pulled into our complex, he asked for the playground.  I asked him if the playground was fun or scary.  "Fun."  But at one point I think he also said "Playground hurt."

As the evening progressed, we ate our dinner, watched a movie, and he began to play with the teddy bear he was given at the hospital (while at the hospital he was not really interested in it.)  He wanted me to put his neck brace (yeah, I kept it) on the bear, along with the disposable pressure cuff the nurse had put on it.  Then he told the bear to "wake up!" just like we had been telling him in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, when he had that glassy eyed look on his face (if his eyes were open at all).

He set his teddy bear on his pillow, then climbed into bed next to it.

Later, as I tucked Big Sis into bed and sang "You are my sunshine" as one of her lullabies, she changed the lyrics to "please don't take my brother away."  My strong, brave girl did so well through this ordeal, too.

Sara's here with me tonight, I am so glad for the company.  Daddy will be home on Friday as planned, since the test results were ok and our little man is already back to his old self.
****
Thank you to everyone who heard the news through the grapevine and prayed for us today.  Four feet is a really long fall for a 2 year old, and Someone must have heard and softened his fall.

23.5 hours later
11/3/10

My boy is in my lap again, chattering away, pretending a mini slinky is a camera and saying, "cheese."  A few minutes ago, he and H were racing hobby horses around the apartment, and before that he was twirling in circles, throwing himself on the ground  laughing and exclaiming, "hurt! mama! hurt"  But then repeating the cycle.  This is completely normal play for him.

God is so good!
Acting normal tonight

The big 5!!!

My girl is growing up!  This time 5 years ago, I was in the hospital, pretty medicated and wondering when the real labor was going to hit.  We had scheduled an induction to make sure Daddy would be able to be there thanks to a new job requirement that would begin a few short days after her estimated due date.
In some ways it feels like yesterday that my baby girl was born, in others ways, it feels like she has been part of my life forever.  I love that.

My girl is whimsical.  She loves all things Princess-related. (It's a good thing, too, because her friends really spoiled her with dress up costumes, tiaras and wands as party gifts!) She also has a bit of a dark side, as impersonating all the Disney villains is great fun for her.  However, the scary scenes in Beauty and the Beast do still frighten her, and I am not along to sing along with Gaston or his cohorts because they are mean.

We celebrated over the weekend with a gymnastics party.  Grandma and Papa, several of her classmates and local friends came, as well as Kelly, Juliana and Catey from TN:

On her actual birthday, we went out for dinner at a local Mexican restaurant:
